Music from the Heart

Luke Clerkin - What Little Time We Have (EP)

If you ever look for a songwriter with integrity and a heart on his sleeve, Luke Clerkin is your man. An artist known to have played 250 gigs in the year 2015 as a way of honing his craft, headlining venues such as Whelan's, The Workman's Club or The Button factory but also being a mental health activist. All of this clearly shows in his songwriting and more then before on his latest EP What Little Time We Have. What an existencial question. Makes you think about mortality, be honest with yourself and your life.

Confession Box starts everything in an uplifting spirit. Mostly spoken word piece will put the listener into a positive mindset. You may start thinking the world isn't as bad as you may think it is. What we especially enjoy in this case despite the content is the title itself. How intriguing yet it tells quite a lot. It makes us think we all have a confession box of some kind somewhere which we don't open to just anyone.

Clerkin shows his raw and most vulnerable side in Closure.  The powerful lyrics combined with the vocal on the verge of breaking create a remarkable track. The evocative piano adds a dark and powerful layer. The words will resonate with the listeners as the situation of wanting to continue a relationship that ended is quite familiar to many.

Stones was originally Clerkin's debut single released a few years back. This new version ilustrates the changes of sound for the Dubliner but the message remains as important as ever. The song deals with mental health and the importance of having somebody to talk to. After what has been going on in the world in recent months, this seems like an urgent topic to be talked about. "it's ok not to be ok even your happiness may feel like a phase"

Not In Love has a classic rock feel, it takes you on a trip back in time. Lyrically, it deals with a relationship yet again, this time with that feeling you get when you jump right in without thinking and maybe later you realize this wasn't the best choice.

" they say I'm not in love I'm just excited, excitement does not make me feel the way you do"

Nocturnal in an upbeat track which talks about the prospects of a new relationship, all the hopes and fears that go along. Musically, the song has a full-band sound and that shows Clerkin's ability to perform both solo with a guitar and with the band behind.

" a love that was distant but almost near"

What Little Time We Have is a raw and deeply personal testament to self-discovery. facing various issues in life and dealing with them, yet maintaining the positive outlook, the pride of how far one has come and what has achieved along the way. This is Luke Clerkin at his best.
